I prefer the Hitchhiker's Guide variable names in Perl 6 and Parrot Essentials. :)

Btw, Beginning Perl is also good. It's a full length book available online: http://www.perl.org/books/beginning-perl/

I am reading the llama book and I like it. For the beginner, which I am, it seems like a good start. I like its use of fred and barney variables (instead of foo and bar for examples).

Also although it is not a book... I found this site (8 years old) Beginner's Introduction to Perl super useful as a beginning reference: http://www.perl.com/pub/a/2000/10/begperl1.html

I haven't read Pro Perl, and I don't think I'll be buying it as I think its content probably overlaps with the books I already have. If I find it in a bookstore or something, I may have a look though.
